Chapter 16

Morning Call

D’Shea came fully awake in an instant as her emergency ringtone cut through the quiet bedroom. She wasn’t sure where she’d acquired the skill, but it came in handy since she could be called at any time to respond to a scene. Creeping quietly, D’Shea punched the button to answer but moved quickly into the hall before saying anything into the phone. Evie was having enough trouble sleeping right now. She didn’t need to wake up at oh dark thirty. “This is Sinclair.”

“EMS five this is dispatch. We’ve got an accident at Routes 563 and 611. Two big rigs hauling full loads got tangled up. There may be some cars involved as well. Information is sketchy. Can you roll on this one?”

D’Shea quickly glanced at her watch, five forty-seven a.m., and then thought about her morning. She wasn’t going to work today. This might just be the thing to help her focus. “Dispatch. EMS five clear. Heading that way. Is a bus on the way?”

“Affirmative, EMS five. EMS one and two are rolling. Approach from eastbound 563 and park in the school lot south of the intersection.”

“EMS five ten-four.” As she was speaking, D’Shea was pulling on her navy uniform pants, a polo shirt, and windbreaker that she kept ready in their spare bedroom. Her medical bag was always in her truck. Scooping up Chase, who’d followed her when she got up, she gave a quick cuddle and put him back on the bed. After pulling on her steel-toed boots, she leaned across the bed to kiss Evie’s forehead.

“Is it time to get up?” Evie mumbled sleepily.

“No honey. I got called to a scene. Probably won’t be home before you leave for work. Have a good day. I’ll text you later. I love you.” Kissing Evie softly on the lips, D’Shea turned and ran out of the room taking the stairs two at a time. Chase curled up beside Evie, prepared to keep her safe.

As soon as D’Shea was in her pickup, she turned on her scanner and listened to the chatter. It was a short drive to the accident scene, less than ten minutes, unless traffic on the highway was snarled, which was unlikely at this time of morning. D’Shea flashed back to the accident she had stumbled over a few months ago which turned out to be Evie’s. D’Shea smiled, feeling the happiness and love she felt for Evie wash over her in waves. Last night’s discussion about all that was happening continued well into the wee hours, and while everything wasn’t perfect between them, things were a lot better. Regardless of all of the craziness in her life right now, at least she had Evie. And Evie had her. They could do anything together. As she approached the scene, D’Shea flipped on the light bar mounted on the cab of her truck to alert other drivers and first responders to her status. Her radio crackled to life.

“One-George-twenty-one. Two-George-seventeen. EMS one. EMS two. EMS five. Continue. Getting report that two tractor trailers and two passenger cars are involved.
